I absolutely love the idea behind Shellcast.tv – "Stream your CLI coding" is a fantastic concept that the community really needs. However, I was very disappointed to find that the current implementation is unusable.
It's a shame because the potential is huge, but it feels like the project was released without any basic quality assurance. Here are the critical issues I encountered:
- Windows Installation: The installation command provided fails with an error right away.
- Google Login: The Google authenticatio in my FF is broken. After granting permissions, the page just goes to a blank white screen and never redirects back to the application.
- No Discoverability: I couldn't find any links or a directory of currently active streams, which defeats the purpose of the platform.
In its current state, the service is unfortunately not functional. I sincerely hope you take this feedback to heart, perhaps bring a QA engineer onto the team, and work on delivering a stable, working MVP. I'm rooting for you and would love to use Shellcast.tv once it's ready.
Thank for the feedback! I'm working on the update and will definitely address problems you've mentioned:
- windows is not supported currently, i will add windows binary download link
- i will add public profile page that can be shared as well as feature some nice replays on the main page
- google login
Are you more interested in live streaming or just having a place to keep your coding replays?
I would actually be happy to stream some of the work I do. My project is entirely open source and I have some unique stuff I'm doing, but I'm not really all that happy about not seeing a stream of a set of videos that I would have to log in to see.
If you just have the videos available there, the pre-recorded ones and live streams that anyone can click on, that'd be great.
Of course, you'd need me to log in probably to stream it, but you should really have a list of videos that are ready to watch without any logins.
The replay is not a video actually, but termial io events reconstruction :)
Anyway, what you suggest is really awesome! i'm going to add a personal publicly available link that can be shared with anybody and where you can organize your replays. Is that something you want to see before streaming your development process?
I don't know that I'm particularly comfortable sending all my terminal commands off to a random site when a video could do just as well. I presume the reason you're doing that is so you can reconstruct it at whatever resolution is necessary. But I can think of all kinds of failure modes where that would be a "bad idea".
Thank you! There is no pricing for now and stream and its replay are available to anyone with the link. More sophisticated privacy settings are on the list.
I'm really interested in how people might use this tool before going for heavy product features.
Hey! I’m putting together Wappdex, kind of like an app store for indie/SaaS tools to help people discover what you build. Just wanted to share in case you’d like to add your project. Hope to see it there!

I've logged in but I can't see any pricing?
Also once streaming who do I share the stream with? And how?
The details on the website are a bit sparse but I'm intrigued by the concept of this...

I thought there might be a list of streams to watch but no?
I'm definitely curious to see people who are good at it.
Yes, I'll definitely feature the best streams on the main page once there will appear any :)
There's already ASCIinema
Thanks for pointing this out, I haven't seen this tool before
