They should be removed from Apple and Google and given to an organization that manages the apps like a repository. Apple and Google can still have seat(s) on the board and likely would provide funding. Then 'app stores' can be built on top of the architecture with 30% cut, nice UIs and user protections. But the core repository of apps is free to use by any company/individual.
Hacker News should be removed from Y Combinator and handed to an independent foundation that manages it as an open repository of links and comments. YC can still have seat(s) on the board and would likely keep funding the infrastructure. Then "HN apps" could be built on top of that architecture with custom ranking, nicer UIs and their own moderation rules. But the core stream of stories and discussion would be free for any company/individual to use.
