It's been almost half a year since we got powerful enough models, and I'm wondering, where are all those great things that were created with them? Maybe it's just me, but nothing has changed in my life so far. No improvements, but definitely, I need to be more careful when reading, listening, watching, and using things, as bad quality slowly creeps everywhere.
Local AI has completely changed my relationship with computers because now I can build utilities, tools, scripts, and get debugging help with my systems with far less friction than I ever could before. I used to do all of this by hand, but now I can spin it off as essentially an async sub-process to the AI that I can return to a few hours later and have the job done. Everything from system upgrades to custom Steam Deck launchers and ad hoc service scripts for my home lab have benefited from being able to run a two-bit quant of deepseek on my Strix Halo.
I think it's going to remake our relationship with software because it completely alters the economics of creating one-off utilities, whereas software up until this point is generally regarded reuse as one of the highest virtues.
We're not going to see that impact for a while though. It'll take years. App stores will eventually become on-demand software and we'll view the marketplace analogy (where human developers offer their wares) as antiquated. I'm not totally confident in this prediction because requirements gathering is still a challenge, but for anything vaguely common, I think it'll be a workable model.

I'm seeing a ton of niche apps being built that otherwise wouldn't have been. As an example, NegPy is an app that gives you much more precise control when working with film negatives, and has been built largely w/ AI tools. There are a small couple of other photography related niche apps I've seen taking off, for example, for managing your Fuji recipes. I'm working on a Lightroom replacement myself, which I never would've taken on before AI tools.
In terms of personal life, I certainly find AI tools pretty useful especially given how awful Google is now, and coding tools are indispensable at work.

I was not agreeing or disagreeing with that point, I was answering the question that was asked.
I think if there's a $6T market, it will come via integrations with the products and workflows of large companies, which is obviously also happening. Apparently the tech sector as a whole is worth $5 to $10T, so it's actually not inconceivable there's $6T worth of value there (especially since the value will not be constrained to the tech sector).

To be fair the chances of the laundry folding robot is quite a bit higher then that of the hyperloop, but my point is that I believe it when I see it. And even when I see it, I will be skeptical that this AI lunacy we are in now is directly responsible for laundry folding robots, that is I think we could have laundry folding robots without those trillions of dollars of datacenter investments and training of LLMs.
lol interestingly my neighbor built something similar! he built an app on the App Store for doing golf trajectory things on courses when the App Store was new. (sorry; not a golfer, though i suck at topgolf on occasion!) Sold it for some cash and is now double-downing on it with Claude.
If you are building for yourself instead of buying from someone else, you haven’t unlocked any value in the economic sense. Perhaps by making NVIDIA richer, but who knows how much they have indirectly spent through AI companies these years to get your couple dollars a month back to Jensen’s pocket.
I've been using it to build things that don't exist in the market (or GitHub). Either where the product just doesn't exist, or existing products do not fully meet my requirements.
For example I got a smart cat litter box and wanted to pair it to Home Assistant. There's an existing integration for the manufacturer, but it seems that although my box has the same model number, it's a different revision with completely different data point mappings - so the existing integration doesn't work. I pointed AI at it, and it figured it out, and it works.
Could I have done it? Sure, if I'd spent an entire afternoon doing it. I don't care that much about my cat litter box though.

GDP is known to have shortcomings. The example from HN a bit ago is mowing the lawn. If I mow my own lawn and my neighbor mows there, the GDP doesn't move. If I mow my neighbors for $200 and they mow mine for $200, $400 gets added to the GDP. So the software I wrote for myself won't show up in any GDP calculation. How happy (or not) I am over that software doesn't show up in the GDP. My subscription to the AI provider is the only thing that will. Now, will that, multiplied over millions of users reach $6T? I have no idea. GDP is a metric like any other and is just as subject to Goodhart's law.

Frontier models are great at making you tinker and come up with shit you wouldn’t have done because there is zero value in it and you would have had to bet a value N (time, money) to obtain before this investors-subsidized almost-free software existed.

I'm de-FAANG-ing my life. One AI subscription can do the lift of a lot of other subscriptions when it comes to putting OSS tools on my homelab, and I truly don't need _everything_ when I'm on the go.
I think a somewhat plausible scenario is that even if you made a great product that’s heavily AI aided, you don’t really gain a lot by trumpeting that fact. There are a lot of downsides to saying it’s made with AI and almost no upsides. So unless AI is somehow central to your product or you’re trying to ride the hype cycle, you’re probably better off not mentioning anything about AI.
Anecdata to be sure, but my personal experience with AI has been that I've used it to do stuff that is certainly useful but far from significantly transformative. It definitely helps make certain tasks easier and faster, but it doesn't do so consistently enough with enough of those tasks to make my overall life experience feel that much different.
Maybe I'm using it wrong, or maybe the tooling around AI hasn't yet caught up to the capability of AI models. It feels somewhat wrong to me that the benefit any individual person gets from AI is derived from their own prompting rather than autonomous systems that run in the background for them. But either way, the massive investment in AI compute seems very disproportionate to the actual benefit the average person, or even a tech savvy person, is seeing day-to-day right now.

A half a year! I was an arpanet(->Internet) user starting in the 70s and yes it was a massive research accelerator (for a tiny set of domains) but the real use (human contact, mainly mailing lists back then), while already strong, took decades to reach mass adoption.

We have replaced multiple 100k contracts from SaaS vendors with fully AI created alternatives. AI is a tool. In the hands of talented and efficient workplaces, it is like any tool. But, if you give the latest DeWalt OMT to a person who doesn't know or is scared of it, and put them in an organization that is full of politics and bureaucracy, then that tool is going to be useless.
We had at least 2 low code/no code tools that are pointless in the AI world. I honestly don't know the future of these companies because what is the point of lo-code/no-code tools when that's what AI does? I digress, but that was our reasoning, and its been almost 1/2 a year and no one regrets the decision.
You might be one of the rare few doing that. According to Stripe Economics, the supposed SaaSpocalypse brought about by AI actually resulted in accelerated revenue growth for SaaS. Companies just aren't building these custom SaaS-killers like HN would have us believe.
I've heard from my community that folks in large enterprises are blowing billions on AI with nothing to show for it. They have committees that decide how AI is used, and most of it is a fill out a form and go through tons of bureaucracy and needs buy in from multiple levels of leadership. By the time you do all that, you're better off just getting funding for a team to build you that internal (or external) tool internally or it's a SaaS that can be bought.
Like I said earlier with my tool metaphor, AI isn't a magical tool that can just be sprinkled anywhere for efficiency gains. Human systems are still a huge hurdle to efficient workplaces. That problem has to be solved first, and no one has figured out how to solve that in an enterprise setting.

You will have to wait great amount of time for great things just as you did before.
LLMs are not AGI, if so they are not foundational technology, if so we can't really built upon them - we can just use their wrappers as productivity tool, if so we will be bottleneck by what we were bottlenecked before: corporate bureaucracy, slow physical world innovation pipeline, supply chains, just a small number of actual problem solvers/risk takers around, etc.
There will be of course a lot of attach LLM wrapper and improve productivity here / there underwhelming weak fart products, ex: Meta Muse.

But go and talk to small companies. What they are able to pull off is just incredible. More features in shorter time. Improved UX and client satisfaction.

Do people need this "more features in a shorter time"? I can say that, for me, I stopped reading changelogs because some software that I use started to update too often. If there are any new features that were added, I probably won't notice them.
And I remember times when people got angry at companies for "improving their UX" and breaking the daily routines of their users.
I suspect the plan is not “make 6T revenue by having AI add >6T value in new and improved software”, but rather it is more like “make 6T in revenue by having AI substitute for ~6T cost or human labor”.
Not true due to induced demand. Traffic increases when more lanes are added to a highway. The alternative to $200 in AI costs is not $20,000 in labor costs. The alternative is nothing because the work was never worth $20,000. So the AI did not eliminate $20,000 worth of hypothetical labor.

I'm pretty confident I can release it in October, after some 500 hours of work.
Usually in these discussions I get "so it has zero users then".
One time someone on here told me that for AI to prove its worth for software engineering, my application would need to be in use already for at least ten years.
I just invented a simple upgrade script for my father's ancient Fedora install. I've gone from version 33 to the latest(44) with a simple utility I one shot in 5 minutes.
Since Fedora moves old releases to some mirror it's a nightmare to update old installs.
Now I did it very conveniently.
Did I build a space ship with the help of ChatGPT? No.
Is it useful to me? Yes.
I'm doing many much cooler things that I haven't released yet but I am launching projects I never dreamed I could do as a solo dev in 2-3 months.
I did some projects, but there are some things that I don't like. For example, when I wrote a program for my old ThinkPad, I didn't only create a useful utility for myself, but also learned and practiced Qt/C++. Now, I don't learn anything new, nor do I practice my skills when I "create" something. Maybe, the things I'm learning are how to prompt LLMs, add necessary skill files, and so on.
I think it's more, let's layoff 20% of the people, give the rest some of the money saved in tokens, deliver features a lot faster (or at least expect them to). Jury's out how long this can continue before the "nobody understands the code anymore" chickens come home to roost.

At work, we use AI to automate 50-75% of our work. Better quality output, more productivity. I work in a bank. But the average plumber or electrician benefits too. In minutes they can become an expert into some tech they never touched before.
I thought crypto was bullshit, web 3.0 [corrected] was bullshit, meta-universe was bullshit. AI is bubbly, not sure how you can justify multi-trillon valuations for companies with 80% operating margin in a competitive market where you can switch to the competitor with a drop down. But the productivity gains will be massive for the economy. I think the economy will ultimately reap the reward, not so much the labs. But I may be wrong.
I don’t think all of the data centers will ever be built. In that respect I see this bubble like the railroad building bubble of the 1800’s. A lot of data centers are going to end up in bankruptcy and sold for losses to a second round of investors.
I expect Open AI or Anthropic to make it through. XAI will go back to being a side hustle for SpaceX. And some open weight model will run on your own hardware or AWS. Copilot will remain a piece of trash and Gemini will be an untrusted 4th option.
I hope the chips are at least procured. When the bubble pops I would like to make a home rig which can run a 1tb model easily and then play games as well.

Your own personal learning curve has also gone up when, if your thesis is correct, it is useless for it to have gone up because it is a skill that we may not need anyone to use, and we definitely won't need someone who learned it last week to use.
That's more of what people mean by no revenue. I'm actually bullish on some revenue coming in from language learning, because in-ear translation will always have a delay and involves constantly wearing equipment, but Linux learning seems like a big zero if models are supposed to be good enough to essentially replace OS UI.

They're already fine at learning from the manual. They have a lot of background. The AI will 1) only annoy them with how much it gets wrong, and 2) not give them any practice with the things they have to learn with their hands. They may be helped by AI powered robotics.

No one “becomes an expert in minutes” at anything more complex than tic-tac-toe, that’s just absurd. If you don’t understand the thing without needing a chatbot, you’re not an expert.
To add to that, I don’t think many employers will be happy about their legal exposure to inadequate training and supervision when things go wrong if this is the sort of training people are resorting to. Especially if insurers are excluding coverage for losses arising from the use of generative AI, as seems to be happening.
What we've seen in the past with generally applicable technologies generally take 20 years to show up as productivity.
There was a Bank of Korea study that showed AI saved workers about 1.5 hours a week, with with no increase in output. Just because I'm more productive at a task, it doesn't mean the people up or downstream of my work benefit. And my time probably gets sucked into meetings. (In the study, solo entrepreneurs did benefit--probably because they own everything end to end)
In term of cool little projects, there's all sort of things that people are doing to improve their own lives or make interesting things. No shame if you're incurious about those.
I mean, I don't know that there is some sort of AI equivalent of the lifechanging magic of rural electrictrifcation. But I don't know that it was ever likely in the near term anyway.

I am trying to offer an alternate viewpoint (I don't necessarily support it but I thought it was needed).
In early May, I broke my leg. Doctor eventually said get on a bike trainer and recover. So, I bought a trainer, didn't like the software that came with it, "wrote" my own with AI. Since it is just written with AI, I made it open source and free for everyone. I'm now months ahead of scheduled recovery. I'd call that a success.

I formally proved an important 2025 CS paper (which I did not write) in Lean last month, it took like 2 or 3 weeks of intermittently poking at claude to keep going. AFAIK, it is the first rust-like borrow checker completely formally proven in Lean.
I'm currently using it as a basis for building a systems language with Rust's memory guarantees, but with new features like generators and co-routines, and effects instead of colored functions. The fact that the borrow checker's properties are formally proven means I can trust more of what Claude is doing than you normally would be able to do.
I run my own custom version of BlueBubbles and a locally run clone of Wispr Flow.
In addition, I've vibe-coded lots of nonsense throwaway apps that helped me with a one time boring task.

The idea that the commercial value will all be capitalized is a farce. Qwen3.8 seems to me to have hit the threshold to these things being good enough without every buying a single cloud service.

Among a few things ive boticed one notable is devops has been less of a blocker / faster to address issues. Most of the time the asks are trivial but incompetent Devops couldn't figure it out. Now they can ask ai and through their elevated permissions quickly solve the problem.
They talk a bit about where the AI companies are supposed to get their revenue from. I’d like to see these analyses go a step further and talk about how those AI customers are supposed to come up with that money as well.
For example, the article suggests $1T from enterprise productivity tooling. A quick Google suggests the global enterprise productivity tooling market is only worth about $0.1T right now.
Do we really expect all the world’s corporations to suddenly up their annual spend by 1,000% on average? Why?
Keep in mind wealth is not a fixed thing. If AI makes their businesses more productive, it would allow the creation of more wealth, giving them more money to pay for AI with.
This of course hinges on the big if: does AI create wealth? I think yes, but maybe not $6 trillion of it in five years.
At a time when corporate CEOs are largely saying that they can't see that AI has improved office productivity at all, why should we believe that a killer productivity application of genai that's amazing enough to justify an order of magnitude increase in enterprise spending on productivity tools is just around the corner?
The latest BCG report I saw on this was the one from this summer that found that employees are saying they're saving time, but businesses still haven't figured out how to turn that into dollars.
And employees self-reporting that they saved time doesn't necessarily mean they actually save time. Humans are famously crap at estimating that sort of thing.
The same report said 67% of regular AI users have increased job satisfaction, so that has value. Even from an entirely capitalist mindset you cannot argue that increased satisfaction = increased wellbeing = less time on sick leave = increased productivity.
I'd want to know a lot more about how they get that number before trying to extrapolate it to a general business trend. There could be a huge self-selection bias there. Perhaps people who enjoy using AI are significantly more likely to become regular AI users. In which case, what that statistic really says might only be, "People who like a thing report that they enjoy using it."
You also have to be careful about the Hawthorne Effect. It's quite common for workplace interventions to produce improved productivity measures that are illusory or fleeting because what workers are really responding to is the novelty of the change or the simple fact that they know they're being observed.
Which doesn't necessarily mean that the benefits people are seeing right now aren't real. Just that, again, it may not translate to a sustained financial benefit that would justify a meaningful contribution to a global $6T/year rate of AI spending.
Maybe they are speeding up things that were not the bottleneck or don't matter. Or LLMs speed up the time to learn, "well this idea probably sucks actually", which is great, but in the end there is still no good idea. For software dev, it had already gotten pretty efficient before LLMs came around - the business of making software demanded it. There are still gains to be had no doubt, but many will have less impact.
I'm using claude to make gaming mod apps I never would have bothered to code before, but they have zero monetizable value. There is demand for sure, but somewhat ironically, copyright/IP/TOS law stands in the way. The thing which committed the biggest copyright infringement in human history lets me make another thing which I can't release because of copyright law. I'd get cease-and-desisted instantly if I did so.
For my part I’ve seen it actually slowing down time to decide ideas suck. It’s reduced the friction to start implementing so much that people are just diving in before they’ve even had a chance to fully bake the idea. At which point they’re likely to get stuck on Mr Sunk Cost’s Wild Ride.
Management doesn’t see the problem because they are still completely distracted trying to measure dev team productivity in story points or KLOC instead of something meaningful like USD.
But does crazy speedup of tasks actually yield more productivity? Or does it yield greater numbers of pointless tasks?

I’ve watched my work go absolutely ballistic for AI-ing all the things.
Lots of code gets written, that much is certain. A lot of slopped out PowerPoint presentations which are just worse to read than human-written ones. We have _not_ magically accelerated delivery times and the product which is 99% vibe-coded perpetually has “oh that’s weird” bugs. An obscene amount of effort is being poured into internal tooling, 90% of which is reinventing existing tooling. Important to note that the internal tooling isn’t actually usable or helpful in building the product, but we are pouring eye watering amounts of cash into it.
If management spends their idle time building dashboards by themselves instead of taking up developer time asking for dashboards to be built and populated for them, there might be productivity to be had...
Absolutely not. A big chunk of my last job was figuring out ways to gently help managers understand that some dashboard or report they built was producing incorrect numbers because they didn’t get the data munging quite right, or fundamentally misunderstood what some field was measuring.
AI made it worse because LLMs will instantly give a confidently wrong answer where previously that moment of uncertainty might have led to a conversation with the data’s custodian.
I don't really care what CEOs say - most of them are, for lack of a better word, idiots. They're all MBAs that wouldn't know a revolutionary technology from a hole in the ground.

There is also the question of time scale. Growing a market takes time. Assuming the numbers above are the right order of magnitude, we are not going from 0.1 to 1 in a year. So even if the number would make sense over longer time frames, it can still be unsustainable for a significant amount of time before that.

I think you are mixin wealth with money. In the short run it is a near zero sum game: money should go from A (now obsolete) to B. For example, brick and mortar shops replaced by online shops. For example horse business going bankrupt while car business is booming. Wealth is created in the form of more convenient shopping or travelling, not as $$$. AI might help some businesses with their productivity (creating new wealth), but those business are expected to divert $6T from current expenses (wages, or non AI tooling) towards AI pockets, or steal $6T market share from non-AI business.

But also the car business is far larger than the horse business ever was. It is not zero-sum; every time Henry Ford's factory spit out a new model T, real wealth was being created.
Money is just a standin for wealth. If we suddenly doubled the amount of wealth in the world, we could just print more dollars to match - or the existing dollars would just become worth twice as much.
Indeed, although there are also pressures pushing banks to lend out money regardless of created wealth. This is why there's so much investment into stupid things like AI - they call it TINA or "There Is No Alternative" (to put your dollars into). The scale of AI is as big as it is because there were huge pools of money sloshing around looking for things to invest into, that's the underlying problem that caused the RAM crisis, not AI itself.
More productivity might translate into more revenue, but more productivity doesn't necessarily create more wealth.
For example, if I'm a landlord that uses AI to more intelligently price rental increases to maximize profit without attrition, I have created more revenue but not more wealth.
LTV is not encompassing enough of a concept. We are getting immense value from nature that we are not accounting for and LTV is just as oblivious to it. And there are more holes like that in it.
Indeed, it is hard to say exactly how much wealth the internet creates, but it's a lot. E-commerce alone is $30 trillion industry; some estimates put the total economic value of the internet at $200 trillion or higher.
That said, this came too late for investors in the dot-com boom. AI investors may find themselves in a similar situation.
And, perhaps more to this particular point, it came too late for vendors behind the dotcom boom. Lucent Technologies no longer exists. WorldCom no longer exists. Cisco is a shadow of its former self, with a stock price that only recovered last year.
The dotcom bubble burst because the development of the internet could not keep up with expectations, even though investors were correct in principle with their assumption it would generate swaths of wealth. For AI the hope is that AI itself will start to push its own development and adoption sooner rather than later, so the timing issue that killed dotcom investors might instead make AI investors insanely rich. That's why we're still seeing heaps of money getting dumped into it.
Obviously there were plays from the dotcom era that just were not going to work on the timeframes expected because the rest of the infrastructure also hadn't caught up - not just internet, but shipping in general took a long time to catch up, and Amazon having to basically build their own logistics empire shows that ecommerce just wasn't going to be able to be The Thing at the speed those investments required.
But let's say you invested in the NASDAQ at it's peak during the bubble - late 2010s you're whole, inflation adjusted. Obviously, not ideal, but a decade and a half isn't the worst turnaround to make your money back if you just sit. Lots of trades that have gone far, far, far worse.
Smartphones overtook regular cell phones ~2013-2014 as the majority of owned cell phones in the US.
But the NASDAQ started on clear trajectory up and up since 08, several years before smartphones became big.
Smartphones accelerated it, but obviously the internet was going to keep growing and growing and everyone could see where it was heading well before smartphones. A huge amount of the value generated by the internet is on the business side. The amount of productivity from making it basically frictionless to collaborate from anywhere in the world is hard to understate.
It isn't exactly not a zero sum game either though. If you want to sell something you have to have willing buyers with either funds on hand or sufficient credit to make the purchase. So yeah that 6T gotta come from somewhere.
Customers coming up with it is basically fine*, but it's also why the SpaceX IPO chose to use "TAM" as a big number to dangle before investors: if you can do the work of {$6T + markup}/year worth of desk jobs, that's your customers.
However, customers coming up with the money is the easy half of the problem. The hard part is having them pay you.
Wikipedia's valuation is on the small side of {number of people on the internet worldwide} * {peak price of Encyclopaedia Britannica} † despite containing a lot more content.
LLMs can only chase high margins while they're ahead of their competitors; the moment the investment stalls, open weighs catch up, they loose their edge. Cloud compute providers still win on supplying inference, but there too competition will likely lower margins, not justify huge valuations.
NVIDIA may remain as valuable as today, but their P/E ratio will likely shrink a lot even while keeping up the price.
Model makers still have a problem here even if the tech is so useful it rapidly grows the economy: "free" is right behind them almost immediately after they stop.

We tried to justify enterprise assistant budget to the CFO last quarter. They sent us packing after asking exactly how many headcount reductions we could guarantee post-purchase, which stalled the conversation immediately...
1) This would make stocks worth a lot more and produce more dividends so everyone owning stock would get money to spend.
2) Governments effectively indirectly own ~40% of all business profits via corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, sales taxes. So governments would also have more revenues to spend/redistribute (this depends on governments not wasting it, spending it on wars etc.)
#1 is still mostly just moving money from the poor to the rich. Most people working for a wage are going to be in the bottom 80%, yet the top 20% own over 80% of the stocks.
Folks stop having money to buy from businesses. Other businesses buy from them instead.
There's no hard and fast rule that humans need to be involved in the economy, it's just that until recently, you needed to pay them in order to have an economy that worked.
Corporations are legally people; give them enough brains, and they may become a real boy one day.
If it frees humans up to pursue whatever we desire instead of having to work to generate more value for someone else than myself, then I'm happy.
Now obviously, hell is more likely than a utopia, but this is the sort of advancement that would be required for us to reach that point. Something has to do the work.
From other business owners. If this hypothesis is true, they're saying the share of wealth controlled by labour goes dramatically down, and the share of wealth controlled by capital goes dramatically up. So most of your revenue will come from capital holders instead of labourers.

That doesn't mean the wheels won't fall off, they fall off pretty regularly as is.
The difference between this loop and the previous loops, is that people making the tech used to be pretty straightforward ("invest in me, your money will let me make a machine that lets me fire 90% of my peasants and we can share in the savings"), while today they're all "invest in me, either this will kill everyone or just make the concept of money irrelevant, either way rotflmao".

If this does or doesn't happen with AI kinda depends how fast it makes multiple different sections of the population unemployed, rather than just one group like "software developer" or "vehicle driver".
That's very much not what happened in the Industrial Revolution. Hand weavers were relatively well-paid, and the new factories were more likely to employ the urban poor - including kids - than to give jobs to people who used to be hand weavers.
It took maybe a century and a half for the modern consumer economy to appear. And it didn't happen until money started being shared into the wider economy for political reasons, not technological ones.
Meanwhile the enclosure of common land was catastrophic for rural populations. Sources of food and pasture disappeared as the Big Houses took them over and turned them into huge single family estates.
Your claims are mostly orthogonal to mine; I'm not saying "this was fun for all involved" or "the specific people who were laid off got better jobs" or anything like that, though with the benefit of hindsight I can see how:

Could be read the way you seem to have read it. With this quotation "other jobs" was "a job" rather than "a good job", while "everyone else" was intended to refer to the aggregate economy, not to all other individuals within it personally and individually benefitting. And the "and/or" because this isn't just about the initial phase of the industrial revolution but all technological job displacement that has continued to this day.
Not even saying it was fast or error-free; another comment I made around the same time used a colourful metaphor to reference various economic depressions that keep on happening.

Heh, got fired from my old company for reasons not connected to AI. Then couldn't find job. AI suggested one that is perfect for me, helped me put up webpage (I can do everything from electronics/firmware/backend/iot/cad, but nice webpage is not something I can do easily), then helps me every day to learn new things and make useful products I always wanted to make. And I found something safe for now from AI and big companies - making old equipment work with new systems. No one will touch it, because you have only small projects here and can't extract a lot of value at once, but a single person who can do anything with some help from AI can carve out a whole niche.
I think such solution - thousands of small niches by small entrepreneurs (1 person companies) who can use AI for some small skill they are lacking - are our future and they will absolutely extract a lot of money from people, who hope to make some more money with small optimisations of already working businesses. One example of such small optimisation - making a slightly better wood drying controller for small woodmill owner. He already put up small cabinet with cheap tuya controllers and needs to control them though atrocious app. Now I can make a small module that will add several more sensors, give him some simple dedicated control panel on webpage. Not even medium company would make such small product, because planning phase alone would cost more than what I can charge for whole system and do it in a week.
And it all started with one prompt - "Given my CV, what single person job would you recommend?"
The global GDP is $126T, a 5% productivity increase would correspond to $6.3T.
So, I have the following thoughts:
How much more productive can AI for knowledge work realistically make the global economy? 5%, 10%, 20%?
What if it also does robotics soon and can be deployed in manufacturing and construction? Can we get 50% more productive, or 200%?
Then there's science, medicine, and so on. Who is to say what happens if AI solves also that?
While I do not know if AI will be capable for these use cases, I see no reason to believe it unlikely that AI could be applicable to eg. robotics and speed up production by factor 3x.

If I can use some open source agent management framework + self-hosted Qwen to basically replace my entire Product org for free, then why would I pay Microsoft/Google/Anthropic/OpenAI?
Ultimately I think they’re looking at the taxpayers to bail them out of this bubble. Everyone knows they over invested, no one wants to admit it because they’ll lose money.
you might make a hypothesis they'd offset operations costs like headcount for this but I think the counterpoint is stronger, if they benefit from increased productivity in your example, why not run more net production from same input.
Still though, the thesis seems based on an assumption that the companies would experience either major growth or major efficiency gain, neither of which really pass the smell test to me. Option 1 growth - money has to come from somewhere ultimately? Option 2 efficiency - put into profit rather than simple offset to AI provider?
Or the AI providers get companies hooked with subsidized pricing that unwinds later and you end up with the Uber/AirBNB situation of market capture and good product reverting to mean level of price/quality over time. Another strategy is exchanging USD-tied assets for hunks of governmental power or to get shares of the governmental monopoly of force. We're seeing this, as well. Have been seeing this, but it's accelerating at a dizzy pace.
In many ways, the AI infrastructure play assumes this piece to be a given, because the same infrastructure is still costed in USD-denominated debt. Governmental power will allow for that debt to be dealt with opaquely.

What does this mean? I've been using AI as a replacement for both of those for longer than a year. If I need a PowerPoint file I have it generated off my tooling. Instead of fiddling to align text you say update slide 6 to look like this, strike this sentence. And you can add even more dynamic content. Like live application dashboards connected to real sources.
You can personally do that but I don't see how having ChatGPT means mass uninstalls of excel occur in enterprise. AI using PowerPoint doesn't mean powerpoint got replaced right.
LLMs can use PowerPoint, but also LLMs can write the raw document file directly without the software. One time I asked for a letter and what came out was it doing that.
What really matters with this though is reading other people's documents, whatever format they happen to be in. PowerPoint isn't the only game in town for creating slide decks, but if you want to be sure you can read all the ones sent to you, it used to be the case you'd need a copy.

If there are no humans looking at the excel anymore, why is it needed? My guess is all of this office software gets replaced by stuff that looks a lot more low level and controlled by agents, and just converted to a nice view when a human wants to look for some reason.
Most people spent 15 minutes making bad PPTs in the past now they spend 5 minutes asking ChatGPT to create one. The presentation/meeting will take the same 2 hours where most ppl will get bored.
This "productivity" gain changes nothing. Software already optimized most of it in the past 20 years, the gains now are marginal, at best incremental.

The PowerPoint object is meant to be a package of one’s insights. If those insights are of zero value (the less time you spend the less value - correlation) - that time expended is a net negative for he firm’s productivity.
It's the old Upton Sinclair line, at the end of the day there's so much money on the line and so much pressure to buy in that people just do. People are easily influenced and overwhelmed by their environment, especially when economic and social incentives are strong to do so. We saw it here with the blind worship of Elon Musk many years ago, then Crypto, then NFT's, and now with this. In every case it wasn't as if there was NOTHING there to admire, whatever I feel about Musk personally SpaceX has achieved remarkable things. Admittedly crypto and NFT's are a lot less useful outside of speculation and some really dark use cases. ML really is incredible and it's going to be something that helps humanity cope with the sheer volume of information that's become available.

Agreed. The literal CEOs of these companies, and their acolytes, have been proudly proclaiming that you can replace all types of workers with AI. We know they have their anti-human sentiments but this is nothing new, as you said.
I think we've barely scratched the surface of available 'evil' applications for AI that will be immensely powerful. Building, for example, an application capable of building personalized emotionally targeted advertisements based on a user profile would be incredibly effective and probably expensive but I bet it would pay dividends.
And will continue to. AI won't reduce those costs by a penny.
As far as I can tell, it won't even accelerate a competitor who could bite off a piece of that. As far as I can tell, it won't even make the suite itself better, just buggier. Maybe MS themselves could fire %15 to %30 of the people who work on Office, but these companies have been vastly overhiring for years; they could have done that 10 years ago and they didn't.
I truly don't think anyone serious believes that, but if they pretend to believe it and preach it aggressively they might make out with an historic payday and stick the rest of us with the bill. People did the same with Crypto, with NFT's, with a bunch of things for as long as the ball is rolling.
A healthy measure of my personal skepticism comes from the fact that GenAI represents the convergence of so many historically negative (and frankly idiotic) influences.

- Tech Bros. NFTs? The MeTaVeRsE? The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and SpaceX have proven repeatedly to be dishonest grifters chasing all and only money. They're like the tobacco industry of laughably dishonest at this point (and consistently wrong).
- Singularity grifters. The Kurzweil cultists flooding the ranks of lesswrong feel suddenly emboldened. They've been issuing batshit proclamations and navel gazing about AI alignment to anyone who will pay attention to them (and write them a check) for decades. It's no more connected to reality now than it was then.
- The LinkedIn hivemind. If you aren't transforming your organization to meet the new GenAI future, your company is BEHIND and you are FAILING AS A LEADER. Be the one firing white collar workers, not the one being fired. Make sure you look good on paper with bullshit performative AI initiatives or your ass is dust. Oh, no ROI? No problem. It's skin-deep and filled with empty platitudes and clip art, but it will make you look like a big brave tech leader, just like Steve Jobs or Dario.

Odd that you mention that, China is afraid of exactly the opposite. Their systems are so centralized for surveillance purposes that an AI seriously breaching their systems could destroy their control.

It is astounding why so many people does not understand how consumer economy works. I think it is more a matter of the copium, because, well, it is generally hard to accept the truth that in five years you will have to haul bricks as a job, and the guy who used to put that bricks on one another and make three times less than you in your tech job now will be your new boss.
And advertising models in that environment? Why should something changed for it?
AI is the second Industrial Revolution! You cannot use outdated notions. The nature of work and value creation itself is changing. Those who do not embrace AI will be left behind. Soon AI will accelerate in its ability to self-improve resulting in general artificial intelligence. This will result in not just our economy reaching the next level but will illuminate the very nature of knowledge and existence. We will ascend becoming beings made of pure energy.
To put this into perspective, healthcare, real estate and banking each earn ~$1.5T in revenue annually. This is REVENUE, not profit which is obviously lower than the revenue in every industry. I fail to understand how AI can achieve $6T in annual revenue when the TAM for healthcare and banking is a quarter of that in the US.
The article says $6T by 2031 and it's global spending, not just in the US.

None of this refutes my point which was that there's no way that the AI industry can, even globally, achieve a $6T TAM. At the very least, I'm confident that it will not happen by 2031. Industries cannot grow that quickly because money can't reach them that quickly.
I think what's lost on the general public who mainly thinks AI is ChatGPT, is that these companies are gunning for knowledge worker salaries. That by itself is ~$30T/year globally. Nothing else justifies the infra spend. Data center investment is a bet that they will be able to virtualize knowledge workers in the next 5 years.
Warehouse and factory labor is the next largest market for AI/robotics, at about $7T/year globally.
The bubble question is really about the target year. Will these companies start on a trajectory where AI begins eating these massive markets before investors lose faith?
To me it looks like one of these is true:
(1) this is indeed a bubble, and AI will turn into a useful tool integrated into everything but fall short of expectations. We'll see some significant multiple compression in the share prices of these core AI companies, but they'll remain good investments in the long term.
(2) this is a real transformation, the investment was worth it, and these companies will earn massive revenue while causing Depression-era levels of unemployment (24% if half of knowledge workers and factory/warehouse workers can get jobs).
Basically, the revenue required to justify the infra spend requires that they start eating existing industries, because that's certainly not going to come from ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions.

I think there's a kind of arrogance involved here in how they value what "knowledge workers" do. On the the outside they see some documents written, spreadhsheets filled out, forms submitted, emails sent and conclude AI could do all of that.
It's true AI can do a lot of the mechanics of it, but the assumption that there is nothing beyond the pure mechanics of it to me is highly untested and history would bet against it. Some significant part of it sits genuinely within the human relationship component that is almost definitionally not doable by a computer.
there‘s another option. It could be both. The labs are never able to recoup their massive investments, eventually causing a huge loss on the stock market, AND the efficiency gains from tech they pioneered but failed to capitalize on wipes out millions of jobs.
sure there's $30T of opportunity here, but how much of that will be lost from people being unable to consume like they do now from being out of work or the same companies participating in this market losing the desire to pay white collar workers what they pay them now?

I think some people will make a lot of money and more people will lose a lot of money.
Most of those investing know this, they are taking the risk of losing a lot to attempt to be one of the ones that make a lot.
A lot of early internet tech companies went bust, a few became extremely successful. At the time I would see high valuations and ask "Yes, but how do they make money". Most of those with an unclear answer to that question are not around now. The ones who had a tangible plan to make money, even if they were making a loss at the time, tended to survive.
There is a lot of Dumb money going into AI, when that is the dumb money of wealthy individuals, I am more than happy to let them receive no return while paying for infrastructure. There's a problem when the dumb money comes from dumb individuals who are routing money from others who do not have a say in how it gets invested.
That is not an AI specific problem, that is a problem where people can make decisions where others carry the risk without their consent. That is the problem that needs to be met head on.

Yeah, this is exactly right. The numbers look impossible because they _are_ impossible. The _vast majority_ of AI spend is wasted and the vast majority of AI companies are going to go bankrupt. There are _still_ going to be unimaginable amounts of wealth earned by the survivors.
I don't think this part is correct. It is spent on things. There will be a quantity that will go training models that do not contribute research data or active use that you could say that the resources were wasted. If the money is spent on infrastructure or the resulting models found active use (or provided research insights) then I don't think you can say that the money has been wasted.
I think a large proportion of the advances in AI that have come in the last year have come from being able to see the models from the previous year in action.
That does not guarantee that money will be returned to investors, Just that it wasn't wasted.
To avoid this becoming a “tail wags the dog” scenario, folks who have money would need to spend it. We told people for 20 years to “learn to code”. Technology is, outside of healthcare, the leading profession for upward economic mobility.

America has little to no manufacturing base.
Technology and finance has been its differentiator economically speaking for job creation. Both are at risk from AI adoption. Businesses have to sell to someone, and at the moment it’s not clear — if the stated goals of revenue are to be believed, how that can happen.
Same thing that happened to blue collar work witch used to be the path to the middle class before the 1990s. The economy managed to create plenty of wealth without doing anything for 40% of the population.
Run up enormous credit card bills and take out tons of student loans. Moved in with their parents, or moved in with their children. Considered fentanyl.
Then again, investments in AI are 1-2 % of worldwide GDP I think, if you think that this technology can probably increase efficiency at least a couple of times in anything that has to do with information processing it doesn't seem so ridiculous. The electric grid, railroads and other large-scale infrastructure required similar amount of investments, though they took much longer. I guess the main risk here is the speed at which everyone races to capture this market as unlike electricity or railroads this revolution is entirely digital so competition happens nearly on a global scale and everything is much faster. That is probably the main risk, going this fast will definitely cause overshoots in one or the other direction.

This is false. Bain says that $4.2T of extra magic platforms/revenue needs to be fantasized, beyond what can theoretically be hoped for. Not that it will be. The primary fantasy he brings up is if the relative handful of leading scientific/health researchers spend $3T to $4.2T on tokens per year to make breakthroughs. Since this is absurd/impossible, the answer would be extending circular financing techniques where researchers can sell shares of their future profits for token credits today. Extreme discounts on those tokens would need to be given.
The $6T figure is based on simple 25% formula of what past web/cpu datacenters have spent on keeping up with competition/demand/replacements. GPUs are much more expensive, and included power infrastructure that is only profitable if the GPUs stay there. The electricity bill is much higher with GPUs and even if everything is as automated as web server farms, it is lower margins on those revenues, and the replacements are more expensive. So $8T to $10T in annual revenue is a more appropriate target, and an even more unattainable one.
I'm fairly confident that the crash will happen because token prices fall through the floor due to competition from the open source models. This will destroy the valuation of the AI firms and their ability to raise capital, so they'll stop spending hundreds of billions per annum on training.
OTOH, this price crash will increase demand for inference. Maybe some data centres will go bankrupt, but the scavengers won't be selling off used TPU's for cheap, they'll operate those data centers to sell you tokens for cheap.
I can't think of any use case for AI that is a necessity for myself (or people I know), even if coding agents (which I use every day) disappeared tomorrow it would only be a minor inconvenience that I had to write my own code again. Now lets contrast that with electricity or internet, if either of those went offline I would be on a call trying to get them restored asap, now as far as I know neither of those industries bring in $6T in revenue.
I think most people would not continue to code if their coding agents stopped working, just like if the internet went down.
I agree its not on the same level as the internet/electricity but its been quite a lot more impactful than you are giving it credit for, and that has only been increasing over time.
If agentic coding isn't dramatically changing your productivity you're getting left behind. There's a clear difference between vibe coding and AI assisted software / systems engineering from how I think about things. With AI you can be massively more productive. Often it's the small, insightful, well-crafted thing that goes much further than 100 decent projects. Git was a little tool written on a weekend and it went a lot further than giant projects written by giant teams.
I never said I wouldn't miss it or that is is useless, just that in comparison to other services I pay for (or the company I work for pays for) I could easily live without it.
I have to ask though, are these lines of code making you money? If so will you continue to need to produce this amount of code over the next 2 to 5 years to continue to profit from your work? I also would point out this argument could be applied to choosing some open source framework over another because of the number of lines of code it contains which doesn't make sense.

Zitron has been talking about this for some months now. The numbers fluctuate, I think $6T is the highest I've seen but low-end is about $1T that doesn't exist today.

Just for fun, I'll join in myself and make two bold half-hearted predictions that will surely be wrong:
- Zitron is wrong about the details, but right about the ultimate fate of the AI companies. Turns out AI is useful after all, it just isn't able to justify trillions of dollars in expenses. Shit falls through hard. Probably not an AI winter, but more like the dotcom bubble, as many have already predicted for years. Everything looks rosey right up until the first domino falls.
- The AI safety doomers are right, just not any time soon. Turns out our depth of understanding what intelligence really means was severely lacking; it's hard to quantify and we never had so many things testing it. Eventually, we really do discover why LLMs emergent capabilities really are inherently limited in ways that just make their ability to meaningfully "escape" less scary, and maybe architectures emerge without these limitations, just not yet. The fight with LLMs and malicious use winds up looking a lot more like a supercharged version of the current fights we have with dumber bots. Everyone winds up having to fight LLMs with LLMs, and this new world eventually pushes both good and bad new legislation in its wake, finally actually pushing responsibility for AI misfires, but probably in a way that is at least as bad as it is good, creating chilling effects and harming competition unnecessarily, because that's just how things go. Maybe we eventually do crack true super intelligence where it's a full superset of human mental facilities, and then geopolitics maybe gets as interesting as it ever has been in history. Probably not in a way that is fun for people living through it.
I can't blame Zitron. It's fun to pretend to be able to predict the future. I still broadly agree that the financials don't really seem to make that much sense even if he clearly keeps getting the details wrong.

Absolutely, I mean, you can count me in that group. However, it seems like AI safety concerns have only grown more fierce since then, so I'm not sure what difference it makes. Clearly no amount of practical evidence will convince the safety doomers because obviously the apocalypse is just around the bend, and no amount of evidence will convince the AI skeptics because the crash is just around the bend.
I think both predictions are actually just inevitabilities when you think about it, because surely super intelligence would actually be an existential threat, and surely if AI speculation continues to grow exponentially it surely must overshoot the true value at some point (if it hasn't already) and thus crash back to reality.
Zitron's position is harder to defend because of course, it is physically possible for LLMs to be the most valuable thing humans have ever invented. I kind of don't think so... but it's possible.
I would think the opposite. Zitron’s position is in fact much easier to defend because it is actually falsifiable. He makes solid predictions which can (and often do) turn out wrong. If you make a vague prediction you are not falsifiable and your position adds nothing but fearmongering and propaganda.
I kinda hope corpos with a bunch of money and plenty of normies adopt AI so developers don't get bled (as) dry, esp. given the recent OpenAI changes which I feel like Anthropic is soon to follow.

And personally I don't see how it's bad to wish for wider adoption of AI so the big orgs get their fill of profit (since enough inference could help fund R&D better) and developers don't have to bear that burden.

I have an obvious but different perspective on the article...
Currently, hyperscalers are growing revenues at an impressive annual rate (~20%), which comfortably covers current annual CapEx. While traditional cloud services still drive a large share of this growth, AI services are becoming an increasingly material contributor. So far, so good.
However, the real question is whether a market actually exists to sustain this CapEx spending at scale relative to revenue growth. The current CapEx growth rate (~50%+ year-over-year) has already outstripped revenue growth, and no one truly knows where the trillions in required future revenue will come from.
If this projected revenue growth fails to materialize, tech equities face severe re-rating risk, given that current stock valuations have already priced in these best-case expectations. A market crash unless a real market is discovered.
In summary, nothing new—perhaps just another red flag.
What's total US annual payrolls? I don't think it's beyond the order of $20 trillion. So they're going to have to replace something on the order of magnitude of half of all jobs OR "create" the difference, in terms of jobs going to AI.

it does seem a lot like the whole AI thing is the market staying irrational a lot longer than the naysayers can afford not to go along with it, but still, nobody can stay irrational forever.

It's clearly a bubble. I'm not sure why more people don't describe it that way. It's a gold rush. People are hoping that everyone else drops out before they do. Nobody thinks all the participants can win. At best one of them can take a small fraction of $6T.
The magic is that some of them will get some not-trivial fraction of that $6T. Feels like the .com boom all over again - most of these companies won’t make it, but the few that do are going to be FAANG level monsters. All the investors want a slice of that.

It's been almost half a year since we got powerful enough models, and I'm wondering, where are all those great things that were created with them? Maybe it's just me, but nothing has changed in my life so far. No improvements, but definitely, I need to be more careful when reading, listening, watching, and using things, as bad quality slowly creeps everywhere.
Local AI has completely changed my relationship with computers because now I can build utilities, tools, scripts, and get debugging help with my systems with far less friction than I ever could before. I used to do all of this by hand, but now I can spin it off as essentially an async sub-process to the AI that I can return to a few hours later and have the job done. Everything from system upgrades to custom Steam Deck launchers and ad hoc service scripts for my home lab have benefited from being able to run a two-bit quant of deepseek on my Strix Halo.
I think it's going to remake our relationship with software because it completely alters the economics of creating one-off utilities, whereas software up until this point is generally regarded reuse as one of the highest virtues.
We're not going to see that impact for a while though. It'll take years. App stores will eventually become on-demand software and we'll view the marketplace analogy (where human developers offer their wares) as antiquated. I'm not totally confident in this prediction because requirements gathering is still a challenge, but for anything vaguely common, I think it'll be a workable model.
Mostly just focusing on positives in my life, not particularly bullish on the industry generating 6T/y.

I'm seeing a ton of niche apps being built that otherwise wouldn't have been. As an example, NegPy is an app that gives you much more precise control when working with film negatives, and has been built largely w/ AI tools. There are a small couple of other photography related niche apps I've seen taking off, for example, for managing your Fuji recipes. I'm working on a Lightroom replacement myself, which I never would've taken on before AI tools.
In terms of personal life, I certainly find AI tools pretty useful especially given how awful Google is now, and coding tools are indispensable at work.

I think if there's a $6T market, it will come via integrations with the products and workflows of large companies, which is obviously also happening. Apparently the tech sector as a whole is worth $5 to $10T, so it's actually not inconceivable there's $6T worth of value there (especially since the value will not be constrained to the tech sector).

I've been using it to build things that don't exist in the market (or GitHub). Either where the product just doesn't exist, or existing products do not fully meet my requirements.
For example I got a smart cat litter box and wanted to pair it to Home Assistant. There's an existing integration for the manufacturer, but it seems that although my box has the same model number, it's a different revision with completely different data point mappings - so the existing integration doesn't work. I pointed AI at it, and it figured it out, and it works.
Could I have done it? Sure, if I'd spent an entire afternoon doing it. I don't care that much about my cat litter box though.

GDP is known to have shortcomings. The example from HN a bit ago is mowing the lawn. If I mow my own lawn and my neighbor mows there, the GDP doesn't move. If I mow my neighbors for $200 and they mow mine for $200, $400 gets added to the GDP. So the software I wrote for myself won't show up in any GDP calculation. How happy (or not) I am over that software doesn't show up in the GDP. My subscription to the AI provider is the only thing that will. Now, will that, multiplied over millions of users reach $6T? I have no idea. GDP is a metric like any other and is just as subject to Goodhart's law.
You explained the problem brilliantly. Frontier models are great at making you tinker and come up with shit you wouldn’t have done because there is zero value in it and you would have had to bet a value N (time, money) to obtain before this investors-subsidized almost-free software existed. This is deluding individuals and CEOs and everyone who seems incapable to abstract from the sycophantic personal experience into systemic thinking. To be fair, LLMs have been engineered to give this illusion, so the fault lies with the grifters controlling them.

I think a somewhat plausible scenario is that even if you made a great product that’s heavily AI aided, you don’t really gain a lot by trumpeting that fact. There are a lot of downsides to saying it’s made with AI and almost no upsides. So unless AI is somehow central to your product or you’re trying to ride the hype cycle, you’re probably better off not mentioning anything about AI.
Anecdata to be sure, but my personal experience with AI has been that I've used it to do stuff that is certainly useful but far from significantly transformative. It definitely helps make certain tasks easier and faster, but it doesn't do so consistently enough with enough of those tasks to make my overall life experience feel that much different.
Maybe I'm using it wrong, or maybe the tooling around AI hasn't yet caught up to the capability of AI models. It feels somewhat wrong to me that the benefit any individual person gets from AI is derived from their own prompting rather than autonomous systems that run in the background for them. But either way, the massive investment in AI compute seems very disproportionate to the actual benefit the average person, or even a tech savvy person, is seeing day-to-day right now.

If you work in cybersecurity, it has changed you life. The pace of everything has increased exponentially. AI both makes the job easier, and harder, at the same time.
A half a year! I was an arpanet(->Internet) user starting in the 70s and yes it was a massive research accelerator (for a tiny set of domains) but the real use (human contact, mainly mailing lists back then), while already strong, took decades to reach mass adoption.

We have replaced multiple 100k contracts from SaaS vendors with fully AI created alternatives. AI is a tool. In the hands of talented and efficient workplaces, it is like any tool. But, if you give the latest DeWalt OMT to a person who doesn't know or is scared of it, and put them in an organization that is full of politics and bureaucracy, then that tool is going to be useless.

We had at least 2 low code/no code tools that are pointless in the AI world. I honestly don't know the future of these companies because what is the point of lo-code/no-code tools when that's what AI does? I digress, but that was our reasoning, and its been almost 1/2 a year and no one regrets the decision.
You might be one of the rare few doing that. According to Stripe Economics, the supposed SaaSpocalypse brought about by AI actually resulted in accelerated revenue growth for SaaS. Companies just aren't building these custom SaaS-killers like HN would have us believe.

I've heard from my community that folks in large enterprises are blowing billions on AI with nothing to show for it. They have committees that decide how AI is used, and most of it is a fill out a form and go through tons of bureaucracy and needs buy in from multiple levels of leadership. By the time you do all that, you're better off just getting funding for a team to build you that internal (or external) tool internally or it's a SaaS that can be bought.
Like I said earlier with my tool metaphor, AI isn't a magical tool that can just be sprinkled anywhere for efficiency gains. Human systems are still a huge hurdle to efficient workplaces. That problem has to be solved first, and no one has figured out how to solve that in an enterprise setting.

LLMs are not AGI, if so they are not foundational technology, if so we can't really built upon them - we can just use their wrappers as productivity tool, if so we will be bottleneck by what we were bottlenecked before: corporate bureaucracy, slow physical world innovation pipeline, supply chains, just a small number of actual problem solvers/risk takers around, etc.
There will be of course a lot of attach LLM wrapper and improve productivity here / there underwhelming weak fart products, ex: Meta Muse.

Do people need this "more features in a shorter time"? I can say that, for me, I stopped reading changelogs because some software that I use started to update too often. If there are any new features that were added, I probably won't notice them.

I suspect the plan is not “make 6T revenue by having AI add >6T value in new and improved software”, but rather it is more like “make 6T in revenue by having AI substitute for ~6T cost or human labor”.
Not true due to induced demand. Traffic increases when more lanes are added to a highway. The alternative to $200 in AI costs is not $20,000 in labor costs. The alternative is nothing because the work was never worth $20,000. So the AI did not eliminate $20,000 worth of hypothetical labor.

It's actually is an interesting point. On personal level I've built a few products but I did spend a ton of time exploring things I was really curious about that will never amount to anything practical beyond satisfying my curiosity.

I just invented a simple upgrade script for my father's ancient Fedora install. I've gone from version 33 to the latest(44) with a simple utility I one shot in 5 minutes.
Since Fedora moves old releases to some mirror it's a nightmare to update old installs.
Now I did it very conveniently. Did I build a space ship with the help of ChatGPT? No. Is it useful to me? Yes.
I'm doing many much cooler things that I haven't released yet but I am launching projects I never dreamed I could do as a solo dev in 2-3 months.
I did some projects, but there are some things that I don't like. For example, when I wrote a program for my old ThinkPad, I didn't only create a useful utility for myself, but also learned and practiced Qt/C++. Now, I don't learn anything new, nor do I practice my skills when I "create" something. Maybe, the things I'm learning are how to prompt LLMs, add necessary skill files, and so on.
Models are obviously not powerful enough. If they were you'd be able to fire all employees that do knowledge work.
I think it's more, let's layoff 20% of the people, give the rest some of the money saved in tokens, deliver features a lot faster (or at least expect them to). Jury's out how long this can continue before the "nobody understands the code anymore" chickens come home to roost.

At work, we use AI to automate 50-75% of our work. Better quality output, more productivity. I work in a bank. But the average plumber or electrician benefits too. In minutes they can become an expert into some tech they never touched before.
I thought crypto was bullshit, web 3.0 [corrected] was bullshit, meta-universe was bullshit. AI is bubbly, not sure how you can justify multi-trillon valuations for companies with 80% operating margin in a competitive market where you can switch to the competitor with a drop down. But the productivity gains will be massive for the economy. I think the economy will ultimately reap the reward, not so much the labs. But I may be wrong.

I don’t think all of the data centers will ever be built. In that respect I see this bubble like the railroad building bubble of the 1800’s. A lot of data centers are going to end up in bankruptcy and sold for losses to a second round of investors.
I expect Open AI or Anthropic to make it through. XAI will go back to being a side hustle for SpaceX. And some open weight model will run on your own hardware or AWS. Copilot will remain a piece of trash and Gemini will be an untrusted 4th option.
I hope the chips are at least procured. When the bubble pops I would like to make a home rig which can run a 1tb model easily and then play games as well.

Your own personal learning curve has also gone up when, if your thesis is correct, it is useless for it to have gone up because it is a skill that we may not need anyone to use, and we definitely won't need someone who learned it last week to use.
That's more of what people mean by no revenue. I'm actually bullish on some revenue coming in from language learning, because in-ear translation will always have a delay and involves constantly wearing equipment, but Linux learning seems like a big zero if models are supposed to be good enough to essentially replace OS UI.

They're already fine at learning from the manual. They have a lot of background. The AI will 1) only annoy them with how much it gets wrong, and 2) not give them any practice with the things they have to learn with their hands. They may be helped by AI powered robotics.

No one “becomes an expert in minutes” at anything more complex than tic-tac-toe, that’s just absurd. If you don’t understand the thing without needing a chatbot, you’re not an expert.
To add to that, I don’t think many employers will be happy about their legal exposure to inadequate training and supervision when things go wrong if this is the sort of training people are resorting to. Especially if insurers are excluding coverage for losses arising from the use of generative AI, as seems to be happening.

What we've seen in the past with generally applicable technologies generally take 20 years to show up as productivity.
There was a Bank of Korea study that showed AI saved workers about 1.5 hours a week, with with no increase in output. Just because I'm more productive at a task, it doesn't mean the people up or downstream of my work benefit. And my time probably gets sucked into meetings. (In the study, solo entrepreneurs did benefit--probably because they own everything end to end)
In term of cool little projects, there's all sort of things that people are doing to improve their own lives or make interesting things. No shame if you're incurious about those.
I mean, I don't know that there is some sort of AI equivalent of the lifechanging magic of rural electrictrifcation. But I don't know that it was ever likely in the near term anyway.

In early May, I broke my leg. Doctor eventually said get on a bike trainer and recover. So, I bought a trainer, didn't like the software that came with it, "wrote" my own with AI. Since it is just written with AI, I made it open source and free for everyone. I'm now months ahead of scheduled recovery. I'd call that a success.

I formally proved an important 2025 CS paper (which I did not write) in Lean last month, it took like 2 or 3 weeks of intermittently poking at claude to keep going. AFAIK, it is the first rust-like borrow checker completely formally proven in Lean.
I'm currently using it as a basis for building a systems language with Rust's memory guarantees, but with new features like generators and co-routines, and effects instead of colored functions. The fact that the borrow checker's properties are formally proven means I can trust more of what Claude is doing than you normally would be able to do.
I run my own custom version of BlueBubbles and a locally run clone of Wispr Flow. In addition, I've vibe-coded lots of nonsense throwaway apps that helped me with a one time boring task.

For example, the article suggests $1T from enterprise productivity tooling. A quick Google suggests the global enterprise productivity tooling market is only worth about $0.1T right now.

Keep in mind wealth is not a fixed thing. If AI makes their businesses more productive, it would allow the creation of more wealth, giving them more money to pay for AI with.
This of course hinges on the big if: does AI create wealth? I think yes, but maybe not $6 trillion of it in five years.
But that's where the "Why?" comes in.
At a time when corporate CEOs are largely saying that they can't see that AI has improved office productivity at all, why should we believe that a killer productivity application of genai that's amazing enough to justify an order of magnitude increase in enterprise spending on productivity tools is just around the corner?

Recent surveys by BCG and others suggest things have changed.
Personally, I know many people in different fields who’ve seen crazy speed ups in many of their tasks.
The latest BCG report I saw on this was the one from this summer that found that employees are saying they're saving time, but businesses still haven't figured out how to turn that into dollars.
And employees self-reporting that they saved time doesn't necessarily mean they actually save time. Humans are famously crap at estimating that sort of thing.
The same report said 67% of regular AI users have increased job satisfaction, so that has value. Even from an entirely capitalist mindset you cannot argue that increased satisfaction = increased wellbeing = less time on sick leave = increased productivity.

I'd want to know a lot more about how they get that number before trying to extrapolate it to a general business trend. There could be a huge self-selection bias there. Perhaps people who enjoy using AI are significantly more likely to become regular AI users. In which case, what that statistic really says might only be, "People who like a thing report that they enjoy using it."
You also have to be careful about the Hawthorne Effect. It's quite common for workplace interventions to produce improved productivity measures that are illusory or fleeting because what workers are really responding to is the novelty of the change or the simple fact that they know they're being observed.
Which doesn't necessarily mean that the benefits people are seeing right now aren't real. Just that, again, it may not translate to a sustained financial benefit that would justify a meaningful contribution to a global $6T/year rate of AI spending.

Maybe they are speeding up things that were not the bottleneck or don't matter. Or LLMs speed up the time to learn, "well this idea probably sucks actually", which is great, but in the end there is still no good idea. For software dev, it had already gotten pretty efficient before LLMs came around - the business of making software demanded it. There are still gains to be had no doubt, but many will have less impact.
I'm using claude to make gaming mod apps I never would have bothered to code before, but they have zero monetizable value. There is demand for sure, but somewhat ironically, copyright/IP/TOS law stands in the way. The thing which committed the biggest copyright infringement in human history lets me make another thing which I can't release because of copyright law. I'd get cease-and-desisted instantly if I did so.
For my part I’ve seen it actually slowing down time to decide ideas suck. It’s reduced the friction to start implementing so much that people are just diving in before they’ve even had a chance to fully bake the idea. At which point they’re likely to get stuck on Mr Sunk Cost’s Wild Ride.
Management doesn’t see the problem because they are still completely distracted trying to measure dev team productivity in story points or KLOC instead of something meaningful like USD.

I’ve watched my work go absolutely ballistic for AI-ing all the things.
Lots of code gets written, that much is certain. A lot of slopped out PowerPoint presentations which are just worse to read than human-written ones. We have _not_ magically accelerated delivery times and the product which is 99% vibe-coded perpetually has “oh that’s weird” bugs. An obscene amount of effort is being poured into internal tooling, 90% of which is reinventing existing tooling. Important to note that the internal tooling isn’t actually usable or helpful in building the product, but we are pouring eye watering amounts of cash into it.
If management spends their idle time building dashboards by themselves instead of taking up developer time asking for dashboards to be built and populated for them, there might be productivity to be had...
Absolutely not. A big chunk of my last job was figuring out ways to gently help managers understand that some dashboard or report they built was producing incorrect numbers because they didn’t get the data munging quite right, or fundamentally misunderstood what some field was measuring.
AI made it worse because LLMs will instantly give a confidently wrong answer where previously that moment of uncertainty might have led to a conversation with the data’s custodian.
I don't really care what CEOs say - most of them are, for lack of a better word, idiots. They're all MBAs that wouldn't know a revolutionary technology from a hole in the ground.
I see how useful AI tools are for myself and can't imagine it not changing the world over the next few decades.

There is also the question of time scale. Growing a market takes time. Assuming the numbers above are the right order of magnitude, we are not going from 0.1 to 1 in a year. So even if the number would make sense over longer time frames, it can still be unsustainable for a significant amount of time before that.

I think you are mixin wealth with money. In the short run it is a near zero sum game: money should go from A (now obsolete) to B. For example, brick and mortar shops replaced by online shops. For example horse business going bankrupt while car business is booming. Wealth is created in the form of more convenient shopping or travelling, not as $$$. AI might help some businesses with their productivity (creating new wealth), but those business are expected to divert $6T from current expenses (wages, or non AI tooling) towards AI pockets, or steal $6T market share from non-AI business.

But also the car business is far larger than the horse business ever was. It is not zero-sum; every time Henry Ford's factory spit out a new model T, real wealth was being created.
Money is just a standin for wealth. If we suddenly doubled the amount of wealth in the world, we could just print more dollars to match - or the existing dollars would just become worth twice as much.

Indeed, although there are also pressures pushing banks to lend out money regardless of created wealth. This is why there's so much investment into stupid things like AI - they call it TINA or "There Is No Alternative" (to put your dollars into). The scale of AI is as big as it is because there were huge pools of money sloshing around looking for things to invest into, that's the underlying problem that caused the RAM crisis, not AI itself.
More productivity might translate into more revenue, but more productivity doesn't necessarily create more wealth.
For example, if I'm a landlord that uses AI to more intelligently price rental increases to maximize profit without attrition, I have created more revenue but not more wealth.
Wealth creation happens in positive sum games. Wealth destruction happens in negative sum games. Winners and losers are decided in zero sum games.

Indeed, it is hard to say exactly how much wealth the internet creates, but it's a lot. E-commerce alone is $30 trillion industry; some estimates put the total economic value of the internet at $200 trillion or higher.
That said, this came too late for investors in the dot-com boom. AI investors may find themselves in a similar situation.
And, perhaps more to this particular point, it came too late for vendors behind the dotcom boom. Lucent Technologies no longer exists. WorldCom no longer exists. Cisco is a shadow of its former self, with a stock price that only recovered last year.
Cisco is a profitable company making useful products and services. The fact that we consider that a failure is damning.
The dotcom bubble burst because the development of the internet could not keep up with expectations, even though investors were correct in principle with their assumption it would generate swaths of wealth. For AI the hope is that AI itself will start to push its own development and adoption sooner rather than later, so the timing issue that killed dotcom investors might instead make AI investors insanely rich. That's why we're still seeing heaps of money getting dumped into it.

Without smartphone, cellular networks etc you’d be miles off. Nobody had this in their thesis so they were plain wrong.
Obviously there were plays from the dotcom era that just were not going to work on the timeframes expected because the rest of the infrastructure also hadn't caught up - not just internet, but shipping in general took a long time to catch up, and Amazon having to basically build their own logistics empire shows that ecommerce just wasn't going to be able to be The Thing at the speed those investments required.
But let's say you invested in the NASDAQ at it's peak during the bubble - late 2010s you're whole, inflation adjusted. Obviously, not ideal, but a decade and a half isn't the worst turnaround to make your money back if you just sit. Lots of trades that have gone far, far, far worse.
Smartphones overtook regular cell phones ~2013-2014 as the majority of owned cell phones in the US.
But the NASDAQ started on clear trajectory up and up since 08, several years before smartphones became big.
Smartphones accelerated it, but obviously the internet was going to keep growing and growing and everyone could see where it was heading well before smartphones. A huge amount of the value generated by the internet is on the business side. The amount of productivity from making it basically frictionless to collaborate from anywhere in the world is hard to understate.
It isn't exactly not a zero sum game either though. If you want to sell something you have to have willing buyers with either funds on hand or sufficient credit to make the purchase. So yeah that 6T gotta come from somewhere.
Customers coming up with it is basically fine*, but it's also why the SpaceX IPO chose to use "TAM" as a big number to dangle before investors: if you can do the work of {$6T + markup}/year worth of desk jobs, that's your customers.
However, customers coming up with the money is the easy half of the problem. The hard part is having them pay you.
Wikipedia's valuation is on the small side of {number of people on the internet worldwide} * {peak price of Encyclopaedia Britannica} † despite containing a lot more content.
LLMs can only chase high margins while they're ahead of their competitors; the moment the investment stalls, open weighs catch up, they loose their edge. Cloud compute providers still win on supplying inference, but there too competition will likely lower margins, not justify huge valuations.
NVIDIA may remain as valuable as today, but their P/E ratio will likely shrink a lot even while keeping up the price.
Model makers still have a problem here even if the tech is so useful it rapidly grows the economy: "free" is right behind them almost immediately after they stop.

Eventually this merry-go-round runs into some issues if we don’t figure out a way to make this huge productivity boom work.
In theory:
1) This would make stocks worth a lot more and produce more dividends so everyone owning stock would get money to spend.
2) Governments effectively indirectly own ~40% of all business profits via corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, sales taxes. So governments would also have more revenues to spend/redistribute (this depends on governments not wasting it, spending it on wars etc.)
#1 is still mostly just moving money from the poor to the rich. Most people working for a wage are going to be in the bottom 80%, yet the top 20% own over 80% of the stocks.
Folks stop having money to buy from businesses. Other businesses buy from them instead.
There's no hard and fast rule that humans need to be involved in the economy, it's just that until recently, you needed to pay them in order to have an economy that worked.
Corporations are legally people; give them enough brains, and they may become a real boy one day.

If this does or doesn't happen with AI kinda depends how fast it makes multiple different sections of the population unemployed, rather than just one group like "software developer" or "vehicle driver".
That's very much not what happened in the Industrial Revolution. Hand weavers were relatively well-paid, and the new factories were more likely to employ the urban poor - including kids - than to give jobs to people who used to be hand weavers.
It took maybe a century and a half for the modern consumer economy to appear. And it didn't happen until money started being shared into the wider economy for political reasons, not technological ones.
Meanwhile the enclosure of common land was catastrophic for rural populations. Sources of food and pasture disappeared as the Big Houses took them over and turned them into huge single family estates.
Your claims are mostly orthogonal to mine; I'm not saying "this was fun for all involved" or "the specific people who were laid off got better jobs" or anything like that, though with the benefit of hindsight I can see how:

Could be read the way you seem to have read it. With this quotation "other jobs" was "a job" rather than "a good job", while "everyone else" was intended to refer to the aggregate economy, not to all other individuals within it personally and individually benefitting. And the "and/or" because this isn't just about the initial phase of the industrial revolution but all technological job displacement that has continued to this day.
Not even saying it was fast or error-free; another comment I made around the same time used a colourful metaphor to reference various economic depressions that keep on happening.

Heh, got fired from my old company for reasons not connected to AI. Then couldn't find job. AI suggested one that is perfect for me, helped me put up webpage (I can do everything from electronics/firmware/backend/iot/cad, but nice webpage is not something I can do easily), then helps me every day to learn new things and make useful products I always wanted to make. And I found something safe for now from AI and big companies - making old equipment work with new systems. No one will touch it, because you have only small projects here and can't extract a lot of value at once, but a single person who can do anything with some help from AI can carve out a whole niche.
I think such solution - thousands of small niches by small entrepreneurs (1 person companies) who can use AI for some small skill they are lacking - are our future and they will absolutely extract a lot of money from people, who hope to make some more money with small optimisations of already working businesses. One example of such small optimisation - making a slightly better wood drying controller for small woodmill owner. What does this mean? I've been using AI as a replacement for both of those for longer than a year. If I need a PowerPoint file I have it generated off my tooling. Instead of fiddling to align text you say update slide 6 to look like this, strike this sentence. And you can add even more dynamic content. Like live application dashboards connected to real sources.
You can personally do that but I don't see how having ChatGPT means mass uninstalls of excel occur in enterprise. AI using PowerPoint doesn't mean powerpoint got replaced right.
There's two things.
LLMs can use PowerPoint, but also LLMs can write the raw document file directly without the software. One time I asked for a letter and what came out was it doing that.
What really matters with this though is reading other people's documents, whatever format they happen to be in. PowerPoint isn't the only game in town for creating slide decks, but if you want to be sure you can read all the ones sent to you, it used to be the case you'd need a copy.

We saw it here with the blind worship of Elon Musk many years ago, then Crypto, then NFT's, and now with this. In every case it wasn't as if there was NOTHING there to admire, whatever I feel about Musk personally SpaceX has achieved remarkable things. Admittedly crypto and NFT's are a lot less useful outside of speculation and some really dark use cases. ML really is incredible and it's going to be something that helps humanity cope with the sheer volume of information that's become available.

I think we've barely scratched the surface of available 'evil' applications for AI that will be immensely powerful. Building, for example, an application capable of building personalized emotionally targeted advertisements based on a user profile would be incredibly effective and probably expensive but I bet it would pay dividends.

AI is the second Industrial Revolution! You cannot use outdated notions. The nature of work and value creation itself is changing. Those who do not embrace AI will be left behind. Soon AI will accelerate in its ability to self-improve resulting in general artificial intelligence. This will result in not just our economy reaching the next level but will illuminate the very nature of knowledge and existence. We will ascend becoming beings made of pure energy.
This really is the only scenario that justifies current valuations.
To put this into perspective, healthcare, real estate and banking each earn ~$1.5T in revenue annually. This is REVENUE, not profit which is obviously lower than the revenue in every industry. I fail to understand how AI can achieve $6T in annual revenue when the TAM for healthcare and banking is a quarter of that in the US.

I think what's lost on the general public who mainly thinks AI is ChatGPT, is that these companies are gunning for knowledge worker salaries. That by itself is ~$30T/year globally. Nothing else justifies the infra spend. Data center investment is a bet that they will be able to virtualize knowledge workers in the next 5 years.
Warehouse and factory labor is the next largest market for AI/robotics, at about $7T/year globally.
The bubble question is really about the target year. Will these companies start on a trajectory where AI begins eating these massive markets before investors lose faith?
To me it looks like one of these is true:
(1) this is indeed a bubble, and AI will turn into a useful tool integrated into everything but fall short of expectations. We'll see some significant multiple compression in the share prices of these core AI companies, but they'll remain good investments in the long term.
(2) this is a real transformation, the investment was worth it, and these companies will earn massive revenue while causing Depression-era levels of unemployment (24% if half of knowledge workers and factory/warehouse workers can get jobs).
Basically, the revenue required to justify the infra spend requires that they start eating existing industries, because that's certainly not going to come from ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions.

I think there's a kind of arrogance involved here in how they value what "knowledge workers" do. On the the outside they see some documents written, spreadhsheets filled out, forms submitted, emails sent and conclude AI could do all of that.
It's true AI can do a lot of the mechanics of it, but the assumption that there is nothing beyond the pure mechanics of it to me is highly untested and history would bet against it. Some significant part of it sits genuinely within the human relationship component that is almost definitionally not doable by a computer.

There are so many people who have never used Claude Code or Codex who think that Google's AI results are representative of what AI can do.

Most of those investing know this, they are taking the risk of losing a lot to attempt to be one of the ones that make a lot.
A lot of early internet tech companies went bust, a few became extremely successful. At the time I would see high valuations and ask "Yes, but how do they make money". Most of those with an unclear answer to that question are not around now. The ones who had a tangible plan to make money, even if they were making a loss at the time, tended to survive.
There is a lot of Dumb money going into AI, when that is the dumb money of wealthy individuals, I am more than happy to let them receive no return while paying for infrastructure. There's a problem when the dumb money comes from dumb individuals who are routing money from others who do not have a say in how it gets invested.
That is not an AI specific problem, that is a problem where people can make decisions where others carry the risk without their consent. That is the problem that needs to be met head on.

Yeah, this is exactly right. The numbers look impossible because they _are_ impossible. The _vast majority_ of AI spend is wasted and the vast majority of AI companies are going to go bankrupt. There are _still_ going to be unimaginable amounts of wealth earned by the survivors.

I don't think this part is correct. It is spent on things. There will be a quantity that will go training models that do not contribute research data or active use that you could say that the resources were wasted. If the money is spent on infrastructure or the resulting models found active use (or provided research insights) then I don't think you can say that the money has been wasted.
I think a large proportion of the advances in AI that have come in the last year have come from being able to see the models from the previous year in action.
That does not guarantee that money will be returned to investors, Just that it wasn't wasted.

Then again, investments in AI are 1-2 % of worldwide GDP I think, if you think that this technology can probably increase efficiency at least a couple of times in anything that has to do with information processing it doesn't seem so ridiculous. The electric grid, railroads and other large-scale infrastructure required similar amount of investments, though they took much longer. I guess the main risk here is the speed at which everyone races to capture this market as unlike electricity or railroads this revolution is entirely digital so competition happens nearly on a global scale and everything is much faster. That is probably the main risk, going this fast will definitely cause overshoots in one or the other direction.

This is false. Bain says that $4.2T of extra magic platforms/revenue needs to be fantasized, beyond what can theoretically be hoped for. Not that it will be. The primary fantasy he brings up is if the relative handful of leading scientific/health researchers spend $3T to $4.2T on tokens per year to make breakthroughs. Since this is absurd/impossible, the answer would be extending circular financing techniques where researchers can sell shares of their future profits for token credits today. Extreme discounts on those tokens would need to be given.
The $6T figure is based on simple 25% formula of what past web/cpu datacenters have spent on keeping up with competition/demand/replacements. GPUs are much more expensive, and included power infrastructure that is only profitable if the GPUs stay there. The electricity bill is much higher with GPUs and even if everything is as automated as web server farms, it is lower margins on those revenues, and the replacements are more expensive. So $8T to $10T in annual revenue is a more appropriate target, and an even more unattainable one.
Enjoy the bredth of choice you have with LLMs. Most models will fail and disappear, and those that don't will become a lot more expensive.

I'm fairly confident that the crash will happen because token prices fall through the floor due to competition from the open source models. This will destroy the valuation of the AI firms and their ability to raise capital, so they'll stop spending hundreds of billions per annum on training.
OTOH, this price crash will increase demand for inference. Maybe some data centres will go bankrupt, but the scavengers won't be selling off used TPU's for cheap, they'll operate those data centers to sell you tokens for cheap.

I can't think of any use case for AI that is a necessity for myself (or people I know), even if coding agents (which I use every day) disappeared tomorrow it would only be a minor inconvenience that I had to write my own code again. Now lets contrast that with electricity or internet, if either of those went offline I would be on a call trying to get them restored asap, now as far as I know neither of those industries bring in $6T in revenue.
I think most people would not continue to code if their coding agents stopped working, just like if the internet went down.

I never said I wouldn't miss it or that is is useless, just that in comparison to other services I pay for (or the company I work for pays for) I could easily live without it. I have to ask though, are these lines of code making you money? If so will you continue to need to produce this amount of code over the next 2 to 5 years to continue to profit from your work? I also would point out this argument could be applied to choosing some open source framework over another because of the number of lines of code it contains which doesn't make sense.

Zitron has been talking about this for some months now. The numbers fluctuate, I think $6T is the highest I've seen but low-end is about $1T that doesn't exist today.

What you consider “losing money” I might consider “choosing not to participate in an ongoing global financial scam at the cost of my retirement growing slightly slower for a while”.
If you choose to believe that, then you pretty well can’t have your money anywhere near the market at any time ever.
Knowing that Zitron wrote about this makes me think that 6T will actually be reached, given Zitron's abysmal track record.
I think Zitron's biggest mistake is making too many concrete and confident assertions without enough backup. Yet the AI safety doomers have basically never been right either, but nobody seems to mind that; clearly they'll be right when they're right, just wait for it?
Just for fun, I'll join in myself and make two bold half-hearted predictions that will surely be wrong:
- Zitron is wrong about the details, but right about the ultimate fate of the AI companies. Turns out AI is useful after all, it just isn't able to justify trillions of dollars in expenses. Shit falls through hard. Probably not an AI winter, but more like the dotcom bubble, as many have already predicted for years. Everything looks rosey right up until the first domino falls.
- The AI safety doomers are right, just not any time soon. Turns out our depth of understanding what intelligence really means was severely lacking; it's hard to quantify and we never had so many things testing it. Eventually, we really do discover why LLMs emergent capabilities really are inherently limited in ways that just make their ability to meaningfully "escape" less scary, and maybe architectures emerge without these limitations, just not yet. The fight with LLMs and malicious use winds up looking a lot more like a supercharged version of the current fights we have with dumber bots. Everyone winds up having to fight LLMs with LLMs, and this new world eventually pushes both good and bad new legislation in its wake, finally actually pushing responsibility for AI misfires, but probably in a way that is at least as bad as it is good, creating chilling effects and harming competition unnecessarily, because that's just how things go. Maybe we eventually do crack true super intelligence where it's a full superset of human mental facilities, and then geopolitics maybe gets as interesting as it ever has been in history. Probably not in a way that is fun for people living through it.
I can't blame Zitron. It's fun to pretend to be able to predict the future. I still broadly agree that the financials don't really seem to make that much sense even if he clearly keeps getting the details wrong.

Absolutely, I mean, you can count me in that group. However, it seems like AI safety concerns have only grown more fierce since then, so I'm not sure what difference it makes. Clearly no amount of practical evidence will convince the safety doomers because obviously the apocalypse is just around the bend, and no amount of evidence will convince the AI skeptics because the crash is just around the bend.
I think both predictions are actually just inevitabilities when you think about it, because surely super intelligence would actually be an existential threat, and surely if AI speculation continues to grow exponentially it surely must overshoot the true value at some point (if it hasn't already) and thus crash back to reality.
Zitron's position is harder to defend because of course, it is physically possible for LLMs to be the most valuable thing humans have ever invented. I kind of don't think so... but it's possible.
I would think the opposite. Zitron’s position is in fact much easier to defend because it is actually falsifiable. He makes solid predictions which can (and often do) turn out wrong. If you make a vague prediction you are not falsifiable and your position adds nothing but fearmongering and propaganda.

Edit: explanation of the downvotes would be nice. Dan Luu made a fairly factual article there that explores some of Zitron's claims. And personally I don't see how it's bad to wish for wider adoption of AI so the big orgs get their fill of profit (since enough inference could help fund R&D better) and developers don't have to bear that burden.
Yeah the Dan Luu post was very convincing. People want to believe what Zitron's story is (which I do think there is some truth to) but the facts Zitron uses fail to support the story to the degree of the claims.

I have an obvious but different perspective on the article...
Currently, hyperscalers are growing revenues at an impressive annual rate (~20%), which comfortably covers current annual CapEx. While traditional cloud services still drive a large share of this growth, AI services are becoming an increasingly material contributor. So far, so good.
However, the real question is whether a market actually exists to sustain this CapEx spending at scale relative to revenue growth. The current CapEx growth rate (~50%+ year-over-year) has already outstripped revenue growth, and no one truly knows where the trillions in required future revenue will come from.
If this projected revenue growth fails to materialize, tech equities face severe re-rating risk, given that current stock valuations have already priced in these best-case expectations. A market crash unless a real market is discovered.
In summary, nothing new—perhaps just another red flag.
What's total US annual payrolls? I don't think it's beyond the order of $20 trillion. So they're going to have to replace something on the order of magnitude of half of all jobs OR "create" the difference, in terms of jobs going to AI.

I think the valuation is based on them replacing that $5000/mo salary with $1000/mo in AI credits. From that perspective its great deal.

It's clearly a bubble. I'm not sure why more people don't describe it that way. It's a gold rush. People are hoping that everyone else drops out before they do. Nobody thinks all the participants can win. At best one of them can take a small fraction of $6T.
The magic is that some of them will get some not-trivial fraction of that $6T. Feels like the .com boom all over again - most of these companies won’t make it, but the few that do are going to be FAANG level monsters. All the investors want a slice of that.
The high end sectors using these servers are paying way more than joe consumer and his 30 bux a month. We are already seeing justification for the boom, and I'd expect even more advancements to come in multiple sectors. That number is missing from the article.

Except that it would be priced based on pass-through prices rather than existing value perception. It used to cost hundreds to send a letter on horseback, it costs pennies to send an email, consumers aren't going to tolerate spending hundreds when they know it take pennies to send.
Models are getting cheaper, and more efficient, but I don't see how they cross the threshold of full autonomous intelligence in the way that an employee needs to be fully accountable for their actions.
