The 'regular' direction at a skating rink is anti-clockwise, as is the direction most skaters turn when transitioning from forwards to backwards. For whatever reason I go clockwise in that transition, and I'm currently working on making my left-turning transition smoother and less cacky, but it just doesn't feel natural.

Because of small asymmetries of how the left and right leg is used the dominant one (which make first step) is stronger.
As a result, being lost in a forest you will not progress forward, but make a few km circle.
