We have a continuously updated, publicly accessible hackernews database in BigQuery, in case more of you folks are interested in building similar projects:
I'm pretty sure the AT protocol is meant to solve this. Not so sure that any of the big players in the social media industry are enthusiastic to use it, though.
Meanwhile the Fediverse is and has been running for years, long before AT jumped in and took the spotlight. You're not wrong, and I'd rather have AT than not have it. But it reminds me of N'Sync eating the Backstreet Boys' lunch back in the day.
It also reminds me of the Onion article "Sumerians Look On in Confusion as God Creates World".
I get you, though it's mostly a problem if the userbase is split (I suppose it is, I'm unfamiliar). If so, it's a long-term problem only if one does not eat the other. Having a mainstream protocol/stack is a good thing.
My opinionated take is there was a kind of cultural moment where the world was ready for Something Else post-twitter, and instead of just the Fediverse, or just something else, the world encountered a fractured, motley combination of Fediverse/Bluesky + AT proto/Threads and there was never a unified zeitgest moment that belonged to any single answer, though BlueSky was closest to having a kind of cultural watershed reaction moment.
I think that's true in the micro sense that the fringe techies and terminally online big tech-averse crowd had a moment where they could collectively choose a better way to communicate.
Sadly, convenience always wins, and most people need a better reason to "switch platforms" (which is, ironically, what moving your socials to atproto/fedi means). Together with the dismal state of general education on digital independence, such revolutions just won't happen for the overwhelming majority of internet users. The lack of GPG usage is a common example, but people don't even own their email domains :)
I’d appreciate if the site didn’t hijack my scroll wheel though. It currently doesn’t let me scroll through the page at my own speed, which is super annoying, plus it hides any scroll bar (which would have served as my escape hatch for scrolling).
I was about to start building it but that could escalate to HackerHackerHack where all the HackerHacks created, posted, and mentioned would be listed. We don't want a Cambrian explosion of HackerFoo sites.
Pls buy some nice domain for project and then we can talk :). I am a bit tired to bookmark a project that disappears in few weeks when traffic via Netlify grows and isn’t free anymore…
A little while ago I was looking for a domain for a project. I spent like 12 hour straight trying out different names. Not a single one was actually being used! Almost all of them were domains for sale (average price like 10K). A bunch of them were registered but server didn't respond. One was a blank page. And one was a company intranet.
I guess those last two are actually being used for something. But it kind of bothered me you know. Like if someone bought all the land in your city and then just left it empty. (Actually that sounds kind of nice... Bad example :)
Domain squatters are terrible, I know from experience too.
You can register any free domain, it is better than having the project at Netlify, Vercel, ChatGPT, lovable, or any other domain - those domains are vendor-locks.
I mean, Im probably never going to bookmark a netlify url. A domain cost $3.00.
If someone doesnt care enough to invest $3.00 in their project I'm not going to use it.
On more than one occasion a friend has sent me a netlify link asking for my opinion on a business or product and Ive replied that its a throwaway project.
Especially because you could just buy your name as a domain, then put all your projects as subdomains off it. I have like, a billion projects off my co-op's subdomain, which costs us, idk, a hundred bucks a year?
Great job! As a little suggestion, it'd be great if this could also process non-English Wikipedia articles, because some niche (usually culture-specific) topics do not exist in English Wikipedia, and I believe there is quite a bit of value in exposing these.
I like that it links to the actual HN comments (I don't think Karpathy's yt equivalent did that), and tbh I enjoy reading the context in which articles/videos are mentioned as much (or more) than the articles/videos themselves.
Thank you I see them now. Since I enjoy reading the HN comments more than (and often prior to) the video itself, I'd love the comments to be on hover or sidebar (like Wikihack) on the main page so I can use them to decide whether to invest time on the video.
I modeled the UI explicitly after tiktok and youtube shorts on desktop.
For wikitok, I made it take up the entire screen, but for this project I felt that having the comments was a core part of the experience so it's better to have them both side by side to get context, so the mobile-like layout wins.
Yeah influence has always had a huge effect but nowadays it feels like it starts to be the only thing that has an effect, as all these curiosity projects are low effort.
Every vibe coded software I’m following has stopped updates after about a week. Is this a change of interest in the developer or did they get lost in the code slop and the AI hit context limits to quality essentially locking out further changes?
It depends on how much usage it gets and the demand for changes. I updated wikitok for well over a month after it went viral because people were requesting changes. Then it found a sort of homeostasis point and now I rarely update it, because there just aren't as many requests.
I'm just here to make a fun little website to pass the time it's not that deep.
I really also meant nested in discussions on other submissions, not just Ask HN - I have found amazing gems hidden downthread of posts through the years, sometimes from internet legends or high-profile maintainers directly.
HackerUsers: List of HN accounts and their skill set. Since I already got emails from my HN comments I'm sure some big consultancy companies already have this in place.
I'll skip you guys some time, hackerstuff - all media links, entities and people mentioned on HN, weighted by posters karma.
We could even display them together sorted by the newest one, maybe with some associated comments.
on top of that we can build hackertropes, cliches used by hn users
I see an ∞-category lurking here
I don't think that'll take off

What's missing are entity-level extracted data, and embeddings.
imagine having this open data for major social networks.

Well as the song goes, I want it AT way.
We used to have.. at least it was not so heavily restricted.. and then AI happened, and everyone closed those down.
Such a sad state of affairs.. holding end user's data hostage.
Cool project!
I’d appreciate if the site didn’t hijack my scroll wheel though. It currently doesn’t let me scroll through the page at my own speed, which is super annoying, plus it hides any scroll bar (which would have served as my escape hatch for scrolling).
Every click of my mouse wheel takes me epilepsy-fast through about 10 articles.
Ah, I only tested on a macbook and mobile. Will check that out.
Remember when the web was just documents?
Most browsers have a "stop loading" button.
Why don't we have a "stop JavaScript" button?
I would just love it if the front page were full of "Show HN: HackerFoo" posts for two weeks now.
Then we must have a "Show HN: HackerHack", all the Hackerfoo sites mentionned on Hacker News.
I was about to start building it but that could escalate to HackerHackerHack where all the HackerHacks created, posted, and mentioned would be listed. We don't want a Cambrian explosion of HackerFoo sites.
Show HN: Peak Passive Aggressive comments; flagged, dead, and eerily popular !
Until dang decides to add them as extra filters on the og site
I mean the hype cycles usually don't last that long anymore these days? It will get old by Friday.
I did this before it was cool Every Wikipedia Page from HN's Top Front Page https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49500430
Hey, nice, I built roughly the same during the covid era pre AI.
https://www.mostdiscussed.com/
Quick, rename it to "HackerDiscussed"!
These "Hackerfoo" posts are just getting better and better, thanks.
Pls buy some nice domain for project and then we can talk :). I am a bit tired to bookmark a project that disappears in few weeks when traffic via Netlify grows and isn’t free anymore…
Bought it before launching :) I learned my lesson from wikitok lol https://wikihack.org/
There's so many dead domains though.
A little while ago I was looking for a domain for a project. I spent like 12 hour straight trying out different names. Not a single one was actually being used! Where? I had a xyz for a few bucks in PorkBun and it just renewed for 15$ now. Also, a domain is an ongoing expense.
Yes first year is cheap then ~10.00 a year. Not a bad deal, as someone mentioned below, just use subdomains on one domain for all your toy projects.
Just let it expire and then buy the same one as "new" on sale again! /s
Who bookmarks things these days?
Who doesnt? I use raindrop.io for bookmarks, its amazing.
Most people I know. Myself included.
When I realized like half of my bookmarks don't resolve I realized web is ephemeral. just look it up, if it doesn't come up then it's gone.
Especially because you could just buy your name as a domain, then put all your projects as subdomains off it. I have like, a billion projects off my co-op's subdomain, which costs us, idk, a hundred bucks a year?

I like that it links to the actual HN comments (I don't think Karpathy's yt equivalent did that), and tbh I enjoy reading the context in which articles/videos are mentioned as much (or more) than the articles/videos themselves.
Click through on HackerTube took you from thumbnail wall to a specific video summary with AI context summary and links to user comments.
( I read my own past comments several times. Brrrr )
Thank you I see them now. Since I enjoy reading the HN comments more than (and often prior to) the video itself, I'd love the comments to be on hover or sidebar (like Wikihack) on the main page so I can use them to decide whether to invest time on the video.
One video may have been linked to in multiple comments, which is why each comment that links to the video is enumerated under the video.
Let's raise the bar. Create HackerDump - it's like HackerNews but only shows the articles you read in the toilet...
Dr Bronner's Hacker: All the long wall-of-text posts
Uncle John's Hacker Quarterly: Its just the amusing anecdotes collected from the comments
Hacker's Digest: Just a collection of meta-posts that are collections of other HN content
Coming soon: HackerHacker, HackerX, HackerGitHub, HackerAliExpress and HackerP*nHub!
well I made this for Reddit and HN:
https://www.trustmebro.reviews/
This is a goldmine. Holy!!!
The travel opinions on a map are pretty neat: https://www.trustmebro.reviews/c/travel?view=map
I made new submission here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50333280
Woah.. I absolutely love the design.. and its so so fast! I hope more people know about this site. Truly incredible work.
Well thank Claude mostly. :)
It's actually pretty hard to post links about it: AI project collects product opinions with AI, so, Reddit posts mostly got flagged.
Incredibly useful!
But seriously, please don't burn any more tokens to make any of these real
PS: If you liked this -- check out my https://www.wikitok.io/
Can someone just gather up all the media types that HN recommends and put them in one collection?
I get it: HN people give generally good recommendations to the HN crowd.
Next up: Hacker Games, Hacker Niche Social Media sites, Hacker Enterpreneurship blogs, Hacker Art, Hacker Instagram Channels To Follow.
Bundle it and call it: Hacker Index or something ;-)

Except it would just be as link to Factorio

You can use this to navigate wikidata graph (90m node, 750m edges)
Doesn't it seem like there's less diff b/w 'HackerNews' and 'WikiHack'. It provides less value compared to HackerTube, HackerBoom imo.
Show HN: Hacker News - HackerTube, but for articles posted on HN.
Similar app from 4 months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48530382
On the desktop this seems to be only rendered for mobile.
I modeled the UI explicitly after tiktok and youtube shorts on desktop.
For wikitok, I made it take up the entire screen, but for this project I felt that having the comments was a core part of the experience so it's better to have them both side by side to get context, so the mobile-like layout wins.
Show HN: HackerJacks – HackerTube, but for mentions of well-known Jacks
Pumpkin Jack, Jack Dorsey, Cracker Jack, jackoffs, and more!
How about a light themed version for those of us with vision problems?
Amazing project!
I can finally breath again thanks to HackerWiki!
Pls somebody make hackertwitter save us from Elon
ArXivHack coming soon.
Hackipedia?
No?
We are now past the "intellectual curiosity" era of Show HN and it has now entered into its fast food slop age.
I also doubt that youtube thing would have made it as high as it did if not for Karpathy.
Yeah influence has always had a huge effect but nowadays it feels like it starts to be the only thing that has an effect, as all these curiosity projects are low effort.
Mmmm Karpathy slop
You should make a version with grokipedia instead.
Will Betteridge’s Law of Headlines Fail to Take Number One Spot?

Show HN: “I took hacker news content and turned it into a message board”
Can we next do FruitHack? HackerTube, but for fruits mentioned on HN
Nice project
looks like slop though
Sweet. Now I just need someone to build one for phone apps, one for desktop software, and one for Web apps and I think I'll be all sorted.
Every vibe coded software I’m following has stopped updates after about a week. Is this a change of interest in the developer or did they get lost in the code slop and the AI hit context limits to quality essentially locking out further changes?
People are creating projects by paying money and not time, things that they wouldn't actually invest time into.
I suspect that this fad will die out when LLM capabilities are no longer as exciting.
It is because it makes $0 and they spend $100 - $1,000 on tokens.
You're an order of magnitude too high.
Coming soon: HackerHackerTube, my website that recommends HackerTube variants posted on HN!
I can't wait for the HackerHacker: HackerNews comments cited by other HackerNews comments
Not quite but close: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...
Now just add a ranking
Obviously the dropbox comment would be the most cited. But I wonder what number two would be
Waiting for HackerMusic and HackerGames...
>..and HackerGames
You mean this[0]?
0 https://hnarcade.com
Podcasts would be one I might actually be interested in
HackXKCD please
If I had time, I’d do HackerOverflow - all threads where HN users help answer technical questions and help debugging!
Better, HackerOverflow: the most suggested Stack Exchange questions on HN.
And thus, StackerNews was born.
That's going to be a very short list then.
https://news.ycombinator.com/ask
I really also meant nested in discussions on other submissions, not just Ask HN - I have found amazing gems hidden downthread of posts through the years, sometimes from internet legends or high-profile maintainers directly.
I want this, but sorted by most down votes.
HackerUsers: List of HN accounts and their skill set. Since I already got emails from my HN comments I'm sure some big consultancy companies already have this in place.
What a sad dystopian future...
